After 54 days and 1,450 kilometers around Denmark, the paddle surfer from Klitmøller, Casper Steinfath, finally set foot on the beach in Klitmøller again on Wednesday night.
The 28-year-old world champion in SUP has been the first ever to paddle around Denmark on an SUP board. He started on April 2 in high sun and a mirror-bright North Sea and finished the same place after a dream final of 70 kilometers.
In front of 300-400 people, he let the emotions run free.
– I do not know what to say, it sounded as the tears pressed on and voice broke over.
– It started out as my dream, but ended up being a dream of many people. Thank you so much for following me. I’m so touched, said Casper Steinfath.
Casper Steinfath has won the world championships in SUP six times, paddled across the Skagerrak and Kattegat – but the trip around Denmark has been his biggest adventure, he says.
– I have experienced parts of Denmark that I have never seen. I have seen the most beautiful scenery and I have met so many amazing people. Strangers have invited me in, sailed with me and given me a cold beer when I needed it most, he says.
The last stage from Fjaltring to Klitmøller was much longer than planned. He would have paddled to Vorupør on Tuesday, to take a champagne trip to Klitmøller on Wednesday afternoon. But a broken body put a stick in the wheel for all plans, and instead he put everything into finishing his project with a long stage at the end – the third longest on the trip.
The conditions were perfect with a strong tailwind and man-high waves, which carried him to Klitmøller. In fact, so fast that he ate a hot dog in Vorupør, so he could hit in Klitmøller at the agreed time.
– The final could not be better. But exactly where I have been far down. I have learned completely new sides of myself and I first think I will understand my achievement in a long time. My heart rate monitor says that I which for 120 days. I think I take a little more, he says.
He can use them appropriately to plan weddings, for he is to be married by August.
