Formula Windsurfing GrandPrix
Sopot Poland 4-7/6
Day 1
Last time I as in Sopot was probably 8 years ago and my impression was not great at all. We sat in rain and of shore winds for 5 days …However, this time its fantastic. We have sun and wind and the first day of the competition saw 4 races being completed.
The wind is blowing from Northeast and is building slowly during the day and we had between 8-14 knots yesterday..
It was a big "box" course. The upwind very short, start line very long and very port favored. Then we had some insane reaching. We have not have that sort of box course for years and I just admit that fins are a bit power full for that sort of racing today!
1st. race was a copy of Portugal …Straight away it was ARG-3, AUS0 and myself in top. I had to double tack the windward mark and lost ground to Gonzarlo and Steve. Steve lead the whole race and won it in the end, with Gonzarlo in 2nd. and myself in 3rd.
2nd. race, the wind was picking up… In the top it was Ross Williams GBR 83, Hubert POL-25 and DEN-111..And that was also the finish…
3rd. Race I switched to a 10.7 and was 1st. to the windward mark. I held that to the downwind where I didn’t really had the power as the wind dropped and Gonzarlo came and overtook me…On the 2nd. upwind I lost ground and Steve came in front. Gonzarlo won, Steve was 2nd and again I came in a consistent 3rd.
4th. Race… I went straight back to the beach after 3rd. race to take my 11.8 again…It was much better. But this time the wind was really tricky. I had a clear start and a good lead, only Wojteck POL-10 was a bit more upwind. I slowly caught up, but we both had to tack the windward mark as the wind was changing a lot. POL25 just makes it and sneaks in front. The 1.st downwind the wind dropped and I overtook POL and POL and was in 1st. On the 2nd. upwind i thought I had a good lead, but as I turn around and look I see POL16 coming on a huge lift from the bottom mark and as we tack he was in front…But finally I had some luck and just made the mark and kept the lead and finished in 1st. with Steve Allen sitting in 2nd.
The organization here is great and everything is organized. We all enjoy the polish hospitality and are now just waiting for the wind 🙂
