The start of the inaugural Quiksilver Pro is just three days away, and a quick glance of weather forecasts and swell charts looks promising for this six star prime event. After the storms that raged all over Durban a few weeks ago, the sand bars have settled, the swells and winds have tempered and it looks like there is going to be an abundance of good swell over the event period.
Local surfers have been practising hard at their home break, contest venue The New Pier, getting to grips with possible holes and nuances in the sand bar, but are really happy with the quality of waves coming through. “It’s been really fun the last couple of days, “said WCT surfer and local favourite Travis Logie. “The sandbank is lined up and actually very good at the moment. If the swell arrives for the event and we get some good land breezes, the boys are going to be getting barrelled.”
Another local surfer Warwick Wright is also confident that the event is going to get some great surf. “We’ve been surfing great waves all week. It hasn’t been all time, but it has been really good,” said Wright. “It’s a fairly straight forward wave to surf like this, so we’re hoping for some bigger stuff to come through. When it gets bigger it gets a little more tricky, and that’s all I’m going to tell you,” finished off Wok with a smile.
South African surf forecaster Spike is also upbeat about the upcoming event period. "As we head towards winter, the autumn land breezes are creating beautiful textured surf in Natal,” said Spike. “The cyclone season is easing, although there is more East swell over the next few days, followed by some serious southerly groundswells emanating from the deep oceans off the continent. By all accounts, the easing of those pounding swells in Durban has arranged the sandbanks into superlative shape for the autumn swells."
First up is the Virgin Mobile Trials, the pre-event trials to determine the final 8 places in the main event. This takes place this Sunday, with the main event starting on Monday 16 April and running through until the finals on 22 April. The winner of the event will pocket US$15000 (ZAR 106,000) as well as the extremely valuable 3000 WQS points.
