Snowboard - NOKIA Worldcup Results
Nicolien Sauerbreij victorious at Parallel Slalom og Bad Gastein
Experienced athletes take home victory at the first alpine snowboarding contest 2008 of the NOKIA Snowboard FIS World Cup: Nicolien Sauerbreij (NED) and Mathieu Bozzetto (FRA) are the winners.
In the ladies’ final in the "Buchebenarena" at the Stubnerkogel, the Dutch rider successfully competed against Germany’s up-and-coming talent Anke Karstens, who caused the first World Cup sensation 2008 finishing second today. After an enthralling and close battle for third, Doris Guenther (AUT) rounded out the podium with a lead of only six hundredths over fourth ranked Johanna Shaw (AUS).
After the qualification ranking no one would have tought that ‘only’ one Austrian lady would make it on the podium after all six competitors who had entered the knock out duels were ranked in the top 8 of the time trials. But Nicolien Sauerbreij didn’t show any weakness and solidly caved her way down to Gold. After she had beaten Marion Kreiner as well as last year’s winner and today’s fastest of the qualifacation runs Doresia Krings (both AUT), Shaw and Karstens had no chance.
A matter of fact which kind af surprised the 28-years-old winner as she had to wait for a moment like this five years: " I haven’t got it in my mind yet that I have won. I’m just glad that everuthing works perfectly this season. The management and material is super which leaves my head free for snowboarding."
Her opponent in the final was also more than pleased with the result which no wonder as the 22-years-old Germa raced directly on the podium in her first ever top-16-appearance: # Actually, it was a normal day like always. I did exactly the same things like normally. Except of my mistakes in the final it just went fine. Maybe it’s also because of my new race board. Now I hope that I can do the world tour, make it to the top-16 a few times and under the top 30 of the Parallel World Cup until the end of the season."
